Teaching and Learning

In the blog last week, we concluded our series on groups and teams by evaluating the reasons why some people dislike working in any collective context. This week, we begin our journey on the new topic of teaching methods and learning styles with a brief overview of the series.

Introduction to the series

Across this series, we shall explore a range of teaching methods and learning styles commencing with an evaluation of a broad range of teaching approaches in the blog next week. Later in the series, we will shift our focus to the subject of learning styles, though both are clearly inextricably interwoven at the point of any application.

Then, the cross-cultural context will remain a primary consideration throughout the series. This will include an early overview of the influence of contrasting cultural beliefs, norms, expectations, and values in shaping various national educational systems. We will begin this endeavour by critically evaluating the contrast between student- and teacher-centred learning styles.

Finally, we shall focus on an examination of when it would be appropriate to apply particular teaching methods and learning styes to address contrasting student expectations. This will also include a practical consideration of cross-cultural factors in relation to a range of example nations and cultural clusters.

To conclude, in the blog next week, we will explore the student-centred teaching approach together with the ways in which this method is significantly influenced by cross-cultural value orientations. This approach to educational philosophy and delivery is predominant across all English-speaking nations.

Questions

  1. Would the selection of specific appropriate teaching methods be influenced by the subject taught?

  2. Can a variety of teaching methods be applied simultaneously in a multi-cultural learning context?

  3. What specific cultural norms influence a preference for a student-centred learning approach?

We shall explore Question 3 in the next blog.
